Florida Real Estate Empire Divorce Is the Absolute Worst

DividingHouse

When you move to Florida, marvel at the beautiful buildings that look even more stunning under the pastel colors of the Florida sunset and dream about being wealthy enough to buy a condo in one of the residential buildings or to shop in one of the clothing boutiques, but count your blessings that you are not married to someone who owns hundreds of millions of dollars in Florida real estate.  Divorce can be ugly enough when the only house you own is a single-family home; it is much more difficult when you own so much marital property that you aren’t even sure how much it is worth.  Dividing any valuable business assets in divorce is plenty challenging, but real estate empire divorces seem to be the worst.  Who can forget Burt and Lovey Handelsman, the couple who gave the Palm Beach skyline and then divorced after more than 60 years of marriage, taking their enmity and unresolved legal disputes to their graves?  More recently, Abe Haruvi and Giovanna Stephenson are at an impasse about how to interpret their prenuptial agreement, and therefore whether she gets to keep the couple’s $50 million mansion, which is only a small part of Haruvi’s real estate empire.  Now another Florida power couple is getting divorced, and their divorce may be the ugliest of all.  This is cold comfort if your ex is threatening to deprive you of your modest assets, but you can get through it with the help of a Boca Raton divorce lawyer.

When Division of Millions of Dollars of Marital Property Is the Least of Your Problems With Your Ex

In the worst divorce cases, the family court must divide the marital property while the criminal court seeks the truth about accusations of the worst behavior between the parties.  Sometimes it is just garden variety domestic violence, and sometimes it is just garden variety marital property, but not in the case of Sergio and Tatiana Pino, the owners of Century Homebuilding Group, which owns numerous South Florida real estate developments with the word “century” in the name.  In April 2022, Tatiana filed for divorce, and now the court must divide the real estate empire that the couple built during their 32-year marriage, which is worth at least $150 million.

Both spouses are accusing each other of resorting to serious crimes to intimidate the other.  Sergio claims that he has received phone calls from strangers, threatening to harm him if he does not settle his divorce and meet Tatiana’s demands.  Tatiana was injured when a truck rented from Home Depot crashed into her car as she drove into her driveway; surveillance camera footage showed that the driver appeared to crash into Tatiana’s car eventually.  She also claims that Sergio tried to poison her; while they were living together, she suffered from neurological symptoms for several years, and doctors could not figure out the cause.  Tatiana eventually tested positive for fentanyl, despite never having knowingly taken the drug.  Neither spouse has faced criminal charges.
