When Former Spouses Continue To Fight Over The Marital Home After Two Divorces
When a friend is going through a divorce and fears that their relationship with their children will never be the same, a natural response is to point to examples of divorced people whose grown children have emulated their parents’ successes in life. Perhaps you have seen Wolfgang van Halen perform on stage with his famous father Eddie, who is divorced from Wolfgang’s mother Valerie Bertinelli. Even if we limit ourselves to drummers, Ginger Baker’s son Kofi followed in his father’s footsteps, as did Ringo Starr’s son Zak. Phil Collins, long regarded by the music press as an incorrigible square, began to receive proper appreciation for his drumming skills late in life, and two of his sons are drummers. As Collins’ band, Genesis, played its farewell tour this year, Collins’ son Nic, played the drum parts his dad had made famous, and you wouldn’t know that the elder Collins had gone through not one but two bitter divorces from Nic’s mother Orianne Cevey. A major point of contention is a multimillion-dollar mansion the pair owned in Miami. The Saga of Phil Collins, Orianne Cevey, and the Miami Mansion Continues
Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey married in 1999, and they divorced in 2008, when their sons Nic and Matthew were young children. Cevey then married an investment banker named Charles Mejjati and moved to Miami with him. In 2015, Collins bought a mansion in Miami so he could spend more time with Nic and Matthew. In 2016, Cevey, who was in poor health and had recently had spinal surgery, divorced Mejjati, and she and Collins reconciled. Although she and Collins never legally remarried, they lived together as a family in the house, and Cevey claims that Collins told her it belonged to both of them.
In 2020, while Collins was in Europe, Cevey secretly married Thomas Bates, whom she had been dating for a short time, and moved him into the house. Thus began a long legal dispute between Collins and Cevey to get the newlyweds out of the house. In 2021, Cevey and Bates divorced. Now Cevey is suing Collins, asking him to pay her $20 million, half the value of the marital home. Collins argues that Cevey’s claims and allegations are not credible, pointing to inconsistencies in her statements when one compares statements she made about her finances during her divorce from Mejjati to statements she made during her divorce from Bates.
