A Cautionary Tale About Dating During Divorce

CoupleBeach

Raise your hand if, whether your ex-spouse has said this to you directly or not, the main reason that your marriage fell apart is that you are addicted to drama.  Some people dread dating after divorce.  Even when you are young and brimming with self-confidence, the dating scene is brutal; just look at those screenshots from dating apps that people post on social media.  You, however, thrive on the mind games and the brinkmanship.  In fact, dating during divorce helps you take your mind off of all the stress and disappointment of breaking up with your ex-spouse.  Instead of looking in the mirror and thinking of how you could have done things differently during your marriage, you can look in the mirror and think about how beautiful you will look on your date with your new crush tonight.  As long as you are honest with your dating partner about your situation, then dating during divorce does not have to be a disaster.  In fact, you and the person you start dating during divorce might even stay together for the rest of your lives, with or without marriage.  The worst-case scenario is that things will end up so badly with your dating partner that you will have another love-related legal battle on top of your divorce.  If your current dating relationship is making your divorce more complicated, contact a Boca Raton divorce lawyer.

What You Say in Court During Your Divorce From Your Husband Can Become Evidence in Your Eventual Court Battle With Your Ex-Boyfriend

A couple dated for several months; the relationship began and ended while the woman’s complex divorce from her husband was pending.  During the dating relationship, the man gave the woman several expensive gifts, including jewelry, décor items, and a Tiffany ashtray; the total value of the gifts was $20,000.  After the relationship ended, the man asked for the items back, but the woman refused to return them, so the man sued her.  He claimed that he had only lent her the items to keep during the relationship, while she claimed that they were gifts.

While the court battle with the ex-boyfriend was going on, the woman’s divorce became final.  Statements that the woman made in court in the ex-boyfriend case after her divorce was finalized contradicted statements she had made earlier in the case, while her divorce was still pending.  Specifically, she claimed that she had undervalued the gifts, because she was worried that this would affect the court’s distribution of property in her divorce.  Needless to say, the case did not have an easy resolution.  The easiest way for you to avoid a situation like this, though, is to take things slowly with dating until your divorce becomes final.
